竚・ You must have atleast a Macintosh Plus running System 6.0.5 or a later version. You should also have a minimum of 2.5 MBytes of main memory (RAM) and at least 2 MBytes of free space on your hard disk.
Double click on your hard disk icon and then select 'by Icon' under the view menu. This will show you the contents of your hard disk using icons. Expand this window, if needed, until you can see the top right hand side of the window bar. It will display the amount of space available on your hard disk.
Under the Apple menu, choose 'About this Macintosh窶ヲ'. This will display the amount of main memory available on your Macintosh.
竚・ You must know if you are using a Class 1 or a Class 2 fax modem. See steps below. ValueFax does not work with the Apple Express Modem or the Apple Geoport modem. It also does not work with modems that support only the EIA 2.0 interface (luckily most of these modems also support the Class1 or the Class 2 interface).
竚・ You must remove all previously installed fax software from your system folder. This includes all the extensions (INITs) as well as control panels. Make sure that when you restart your Mac, none of the previous fax icons come up at the bottom of the screen.
竚・ This release of ValueFax is not compatible with QuickDraw GX. You will have to disable QuickDraw GX and restart to use ValueFax.
竚・ You should disable virtual memory if you have trouble running ValueFax. RamDoubler works fine with ValueFax.
The ValueFax software uses an Installer program to perform its installation. Double click on the Installer to start the Installer. Then click Install to start the installation process. If you see your modem listed as one of the selections, please select that, otherwise, select Class 1 or Class 2 installation. After installation is complete, click on the Restart button to activate the ValueFax software.
The installation process copies files as follows:
竚・ Desk Accessories 'FaxStatus' and 'QuickFax' are copied to the Apple Menu Items folder in your system folder if you are running system 7.0 or later. They are installed as desk accessories if you are using system 6.x.
竚・ Extensions 'ValueFax Background' and 'ValueFax fax driver' are copied to the Extensions folder in your system folder if you are running system 7.0 or later. They are copied to the system folder if you are using system 6.x.
竚・ Folder 'ValueFax Fax Folder' is copied into your system folder. It contains the initial setup and the initial phone book.
竚・ Folder 'ValueFax 2.0.8' is copied to your topmost (i.e. root) folder. It contains this manual, the registration program and the release notes. This folder can be moved to another place if you prefer.
竚・ The 'ValueFax Manager' program is copied to your desktop for easy access. It can also be moved anywhere else if you prefer.
Note: If you are reinstalling or upgrading the fax software, your previous 'phone book' and 'setup' files in the 'ValueFax Fax Folder' will be preserved for your convenience.
You should read the 'ValueFax Release Notes' file in the 'ValueFax 2.0.8' folder to learn about changes from the previous version and any last minute information.
For your convenience, the 'ValueFax Manager' application is automatically placed on the desktop if you are using system 7.0 or later. It is left in the top level hard disk folder (Macintosh HD) if you are using system 6.x. It can be dragged and placed anywhere you choose. Double click on the 'ValueFax Manager' on the desktop now to configure your software as explained in the next chapter. Duo users must configure ValueFax before using it. Duos and other machines that have a single port for modem and printer MUST turn off AppleTalk before using ValueFax.
The 'ValueFax Fax Folder' MUST remain inside the system folder at all times.
1.1 Operation without the background program.
If you want to remove the ValueFax software for some reason, or if you don't want to use the background operation, it is sufficient to remove the "ValueFax Background" file from the system folder (system 6.x) or from the extensions folder (system 7.x). You can also use an extension manager to disable "ValueFax Background". You will still be able to send a fax using the "Send Now" button of the ValueFax printer dialog. Of course, to send a fax, you will have to first select the ValueFax fax driver in the chooser since the ValueFax Background will no longer be running. You will also not be able to receive a fax, send a delayed fax or send a QuickFax.
If you prefer, you can leave the background program in the extensions folder and choose the "come up stopped" option in the "Background operation" dialog under the "setup" in the ValueFax Manager. This way, option print (see chapter 6) will work but the background program is completely out of the way until you go to FaxStatus and click on "Start Background". Please note however that the background program is loaded into memory and it will take about 300 KBytes of memory for its code and buffers. Until you start the background program using FaxStatus, you will not be able to receive a fax, send a delayed fax or send a QuickFax.
1.2 Modem XON/XOFF command configuration
This version of ValueFax has support for modem type, initialization string and reset string. These can be configured using the "Modem Commands" dialog box under the "setup" menu of "ValueFax Manager" (see section 2.6). If you installed the "Generic Class 2" software, your dialog box defaults would be as follows:
ツ
Note: If you are upgrading from an earlier ValueFax release, these three lines may not be in the setup file. You should then start "ValueFax Manager" and change any setting and quit. Doing this will update the setup file to include the above lines upto the ':' on each line.

* Users using all other modems should check if their modems have some special flow control command to put the modem in XON/XOFF flow control mode. You can experiment with this command but that is not necessary for most modems. If you do discover a command that is required for your modem, please send us email at valuefax@netcom.com telling us the modem and the command needed.
* In any case, do not put reset commands such as AT&F or ATZ in the XON/XOFF string since that will prevent proper working of ValueFax.
* The modem reset string of AT&F will work for most of the modems. However, some modems require ATZ or AT&F1 as the reset string. Please refer to your modem manual or experiment if you find that the modem is left in the fax mode after a fax is sent.
* You will need to restart the Mac for these change to take effect.
From release 2.0.9, ValueFax is supporting the special option for "Hardware Handshaking". If your modem supports this option and if you have the special hardware handshaking cable, you can click ON this checkbox. It eliminates the need to find and use the proper XON/XOFF command. This is needed for using the Shiva NetModem. Please be careful when using this option because you may have to specify the reset command to be AT&F1V or AT&F2V to put the modem in the hardware handshaking mode. This is specific to the modem so unfortunately we cannot give uniform instructions. However, this is a good option to try if you are having difficulty determining the correct flow control command.
You must know if your modem is a Class 1 modem or a Class 2 modem and select the appropriate installation package. The class of the modem can be found out as follows:
1. Start any communications program such as Zterm, MicroPhone or SitCOMM.
2. Type the following commands followed by "return" to the modem after selecting the correct communications speed and other parameters.
AT
The modem will answer "OK"
AT+FCLASS=?
The modem will answer with one of the following strings:
"ERROR" - this means that the modem does not understand the FCLASS command. You cannot use ValueFax for this modem.
"0,2" - this means the modem supports Class 2 commands.
"0,1" - this means the modem supports Class 1 commands
"0,1,2" - this means the modem supports Class 1 and Class 2 commands. If your modem supports both Class 1 and Class 2 commands, install Class 2 software first. If there is any problem using the Class 2 software, try using Class 1 software.
"0,1,2.0" - this means the modem supports Class 1 and class 2.0 commands. Class 2.0 is not supported by ValueFax so you should install class 1 software.
Note: If you discover that you have installed the wrong class of software, you will need to run the installer again and choose the correct class. It is not sufficient to just change the line in the setup file.
